Renewal of Viale Umberto I. Project
project: Arteas Progetti and arch. Andrea Oliva, dott. agr. Giuseppe Baldi, arch. Mariachiara Gandolfi
location: Reggio Emilia
client: Municipality of Reggio Emilia
year: 2017

The project concerning Viale Umberto I is inspired by the necessity to renew the main roads leading to the city centre, in order to improve their material perception, functionality and traffic flow. The historic and local importance of the road axis proves the necessity of a new strategy which can take advantage of the full potential of the main routes, and that has already been adopted by the Municipal Administration. A strategy revealing the complexity of the contemporary culture and developing positive impacts such as an increased sense of belonging and identity, defining clearly the authentic features of the urban system. The partition represented by the boulevard within the urban fabric turns into a “hinge” holding together two different parts of the city, stating the relation between the architectures that define its very borders, becoming the perfect background to find once again a sense of community.
